Vrede Homestead began long before the first jar was filled.

It began in two kitchens.

One from the wide, quiet Karoo. One from the wind-swept West Coast.

My grandmothers — one Karoo born, the other shaped by the salt air of the coast — were women who understood flavour without recipes. They taught me that food is not about fancy ingredients. It is about taste, aroma and texture.

In the Karoo kitchen, flavours were deep and patient. Slow simmering pots. Dried herbs. Warm spice carried by dry air.

On the West Coast, it was different — clean, bold, a respect for freshness. Sea air, simplicity, letting ingredients speak for themselves.

They did not measure with spoons. They cooked with instinct

And then there was my mother.

She did not love cooking much. But she stood beside me in the kitchen. She supported me completely. And she taught me one of the greatest lessons of all:

Use what you can. Use what you have on hand. Make it work beautifully.

That lesson lives inside every jar of Vrede Homestead.

Today, in a small South African town, between morning coffee at 06h30 and dinner prepared by 16h30, I harvest cayenne chillies from my garden. Twice a year. About 80 jars per season. Limited. Intentional.

Honey is bottled slowly. Spice blends are mixed carefully. Chilli sauce simmers until it tastes right — never rushed, never compromised.

There is no factory. No large production line. Just hands shaped by three women before me

Vrede means peace.
